McCaig’s Tower

Oban, Scotland

High above the harbour of Oban, McCaig’s Tower watches over the town and the islands beyond.

Built from Bonawe granite, construction began in 1897 at the direction of local banker John Stuart McCaig. His ambitious project was intended partly as a lasting monument to the McCaig family, while also providing work for local stonemasons. The structure was never completed, leaving behind the distinctive landmark we see today.

For me, the tower is less about the monument itself and more about its position. From the hill, Oban opens out towards the sea, with ferries, rooftops and distant islands creating a constantly changing scene.

It is the kind of place that rewards taking your time — looking beyond the obvious landmark and waiting for the light to do the rest.

Places worth photographing.
